MotoGP sprint results are Saturday’s race, not Sunday’s Grand Prix. Since 2023 every premier-class weekend has a Tissot Sprint: about half the Grand Prix lap count, points for the top nine, usually 3 p.m. local. If a headline says “sprint results” and you are looking at 25 points and 15 finishers, you are reading the wrong race.
This page is how to read those results. It is not a live timing board. For today’s session you still need the official timing app or broadcaster. The format does not change week to week.
What a MotoGP sprint is
Same sporting rules as Sunday, shorter. Fuel allocation is lower (12 litres against 22 on Sunday in the published rules). Bikes are lighter. Tyre wear is less of a Sunday problem and more of a “go now” problem. A bad start is harder to fix because there are fewer laps to pass.
The sprint does not set Sunday’s grid. Q1 and Q2 on Saturday morning set both grids. Riders can crash or finish last on Saturday and still start Sunday from the same qualifying slot.
Sprint points vs Sunday points
Sprint, positions 1 through 9: 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Nobody from 10th back scores on Saturday.
Sunday, positions 1 through 15: 25, 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The Grand Prix still pays more. That is why a rider can win sprints and lose the title, or the reverse. Jorge Martin’s 2024 title is the usual example: fewer Sunday wins than Francesco Bagnaia, more Saturday haul. Marc Marquez’s 2025 title stacked both.
How to read a results graphic
Check the session name first: Tissot Sprint vs Race. Then laps. Then points. A “sprint race results” table that lists 15 point scorers is mislabeled. Moto2 and Moto3 do not run this Saturday sprint. If the class is not MotoGP, you are on a different sheet.
Weekend shape, premier class: Friday practice (the long Friday session is the one that locks the top ten into Q2), Saturday FP, Q1, Q2, sprint, Sunday warm-up, Sunday race. “MotoGP results today” on a Friday is practice. On Saturday afternoon it is usually the sprint. On Sunday afternoon it is the GP.
