Sturgis Motorcycle Rally attendance is not a turnstile. The number you see after each August is vehicles counted at official checkpoints around the Black Hills, logged by the state. One bike can pass more than once. A truck towing a trailer is a vehicle. Treat the figure as traffic volume, not “this many bikers came.”
For 2025 the published checkpoint total was 537,459 vehicles, the strongest count in about a decade and up from 2024. The 86th rally ran August 7 to 16, 2026. The 2026 final count posts after the routes are tallied. Do not use a mid-rally rumor as the official number.
How the count works
South Dakota and local agencies pick monitoring locations on the roads that feed Sturgis. They count vehicles during the rally window. That is why a “how many attend Sturgis bike rally” answer that sounds like a census is wrong. Chamber copy often rounds to “around 500,000 visitors” for a typical year. The 75th rally in 2015 is the anniversary spike people still quote, in the 700,000 range in older recaps. Different years, different methods, same confusion.
What the number is for
Hotels, DOT, and the City of Sturgis use it to staff traffic, vendors, and medical. Riders use it to guess crowd. If you need lodging, the count is a warning, not a ticket. Sturgis itself has few rooms. Deadwood, Spearfish, and Rapid City take the overflow. Book those months ahead, not the week of.
Attendance is not the same as “Sturgis bike week 2026” dates. Dates are August 7 to 16. Attendance is the after-action number. If a page mixes them, it is padding.
